Renting bike in Leh for Leh-Ladakh trip? Here’s all you need to know about!

Introduction

A bike trip to Ladakh is  literally in everyone’s bucket list. There can be no passionate biker who doesn’t want to explore Ladakh. The tricky thing here would be the bike. Would it make more sense to to take their own bike to Ladakh or rent a bike from Leh or other places. Here’s the detailed guide about pros and cons, exact reality of renting bikes in Ladakh. This is my experience based on renting bike in Leh during my trip on October 2024.

Pros of renting bike/ cons of own one

  • The approx distance between Bangalore to Leh is around 3051 kms. This itself takes more than 3 days mostly on plain dry highways
  • One can carry their own bike only if the documents are in rider’s name with all valid documents, so if this isn’t the case then its not possible to move around Ladakh
  • If one’s planning to ship their bikes till Chandigarh/Delhi, there have been instances of bike getting damaged, keep this is in mind.
  • Roads in few parts of Ladakh is extremely harsh. Very high altitude, stones on road hitting hard, water crossings, be ready for scratches, damages
  • The overall duration of trip would increase if own bike isn’t transported one way or both the ways
  • The rental owner would help in any emergency/breakdown and reimburse in some cases. This would be of great help during emergency situations

Cons of renting bike/pros of own bike

  • Only Ladakh registered bikes are allowed to explore in the UT. So rental bikes of JK, HP, PB, DL aren’t allowed. This doesn’t apply to personal bikes/
  • As the roads are terrible, the condition of rental bike might not be very great. Atleast one or the other issue might happen.
  • Mileage of rental bikes would be comparatively lesser due to not so good maintenance. This would be critical due to the availability of fuel pumps in the UT
  • One would be aware of the limitations, condition, basic knowledge of their personal bike well. That would be of great help

Rental bikes in Leh

No other city other than Leh in Ladakh probably would have rental bike services. So Leh is the only option. There are so many options available around the Leh city, mainly in the market area.

Variety of bikes are available too from scooty to all kinds of bikes. All major bikes like RE Himalayan 411, 450, 350, KTM adventure and all major ones are easily available at different budgets. The condition would vary depending on the per day rental cost, so usually the ones in bad conditions are offered at lesser costs.

Rental bikes outside Ladakh

Someone planning their trip from Chandigarh, Delhi should keep in mind that bikes registered out of Ladakh aren’t valid for Ladakh sightseeing.

Someone planning the same can bring the bike to Leh and park there. Get a LA registered ones

Few agencies might have tie up with Ladakh agencies, check prior in Manali/Chandigarh

Few even give discount per day when parked in Leh when rented from Manali, check accordingly

Tips for renting bike in Leh

  • Check the condition of the bike properly, take a proper test-drive, video before renting
  • Have multiple numbers of the owner just in case of emergency
  • Discuss about the terms during breakdown
  • Don’t forget to negotiate the price if you’re taking for longer duration. Also ask for helmet, saddle, rope, gears if needed on discounted rates
  • Discuss your itinerary and ask for feedback, road conditions, any road-block, weather etc
  • Don’t opt for cheaper bikes and as they tend to be in poor condition
  • If you’re not comfortable with planning on own, opt for package along with guide for better experience

Conclusion

The pain of not having a bike or not able to take your own bike to Ladakh shouldn’t stop you from planning your trip to Ladakh. I believe more than half of the riders we noticed rented the bikes and were able to cover all the places without much hassle. Small issues are part and parcel in such harsh conditions, which would have happened with any vehicles, rental isn’t to be blamed. Happy riding,
