Uttarakhand, which is also popularly known as Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is one of the most spectacular states of India, which is known for its majestic landscapes, very humble people, great weather, so many pilgrim spots and many more. Though the state is small, the number of tourist attractions are a lot and also due to its proximity to our national capital, good road, rail, air connectivity. So if you’re someone who is planning a trip to Uttarakhand, these are some of the places which you should not forget to visit.

Kedarnath

This is the most trekked pilgrim spot as far as I know. Known for its amazing long trek and beautiful views of the surrounding mountain ranges, this is a must visit place in Uttarakhand. It’s open only for 6 months from April to November, due to heavy snowfall, so plan your trip accordingly.

Badrinath

This is one among the 4 char dhams of India and accessible by road. It is at the far end of Uttarakhand, close to the China border. Again it’s open only for 6 months, similar to Kedarnath. The Badri Vishal Temple is a world famous one, known for its history from the Mahabharata period, along with the Saraswati river. 

Mana

A very tiny but a very beautiful village which is just 6 kms from Badrinath. This is the last village of India before the China border and Mana Pass is the official border after 60 kms. It is believed that Vyas had written Mahabharata here and also the famous Bhim Pul is also situated here. The stunning views of the snow capped surrounding mountains is just a treat to the eyes.

Tungnath – The Highest Shiva Temple of the World

At 12,600 ft, lies Chopta Tungnath, the highest Shiva Temple of the World. One has to trek for 7 kms from Chopta to reach this temple and if you trek for another 6 kms, you can reach the Chandrashila top, which is another beautiful peak to witness the fabulous 360 degree view of some of the most prominent mountains of Himalayas.

Auli

The small yet picture-perfect town is India’s premier ski resort destination. Auli’s skiing slopes are popular among tourists and professionals alike. In winter, Auli hosts several snow adventure events. You can also take skiing lessons here. Auli offers panoramic views of some of India’s highest peaks, including the second-highest in the country, Nanda Devi (7,816m).  It is also the gateway to the Nanda Devi and the Valley of Flowers National Park, including the Hemkund Sahib gurdwara.

Rishikesh

This is a very unique town popular for many reasons. It is a major town located on the banks of River Ganga which is famous for Ganga Aarti, Rafting, Bungee Jumping and many other activities. Also it is also very famous for Yoga and Meditation classes, courses, where many foreign tourists visit round the year to indulge in spiritual activities.

Gangotri and Yamunotri

These are other 2 very famous pilgrim centres located in the remote areas of Uttarakhand. One of them is the origin place of river Ganga and the other one is the origin place of river Yamuna. The temples have a great history and many pilgrims visit them every year.

Mussoorie

Also known as Queen of the Hills, is among the most popular hill stations of the country. A captivating paradise for leisure travelers and honeymooners, it is a perfect summer resort. Located on a 15-km-long horseshoe ridge with the grand Himalayas as a backdrop, Mussoorie spreads across at a height of 2,000 m above sea level. From this vantage point, it offers scenic views of Himalayas peaks in Western Garhwal.

Nainital

The charming Himalayan lake town, is a picture-postcard perfect hill-station and one of the most popular in Northern India. Commonly known as the ‘Lake District’, Nainital is nestled high up in the Kumaon Himalayas at an altitude of around 2,000 m above sea level. This beautiful town is surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as ‘Sapta-Shring’ – Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta and Sher-Ka-Danda.
