Nako and Tabo, nestled in the beautiful Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, are two of the most beautiful villages I’ve ever visited in my life. The fabulous views of the Mountains all around, the truly adventurous roads that takes you here through Hindustan-Tibet Highway, amazing culture, Apple Gardens are a few reasons to visit this lovely village.

The trip to Spiti is incomplete without visiting Nako and Tabo which lies on the way between Reckong Peo to Kaza. Also everyone planning a Spiti trip from the Shimla side would first visit Nako then proceed to Tabo then other destinations in Spiti.

Nako and Tabo, nestled in the majestic Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh, are the picturesque villages that exudes tranquility and charm. It’s allure lies not only in its natural beauty but also in its rich cultural heritage, as it is home to ancient temples and monasteries that speak volumes about the region’s spiritual significance along with the humongous mountains all around and a pretty river flowing side by.

The Highest Point of Himachal Pradesh

One can have a very clear view of Reo Purgyl, the Highest peak of Himachal Pradesh from Nako village. At a height of around 22275 ft, this is one of the most difficult treks in North India very only very brave and professional trekkers have managed to get onto the peak. As far as I know, due to large number of mountains in this area, one can get a clear view of this mountain only from Nako village.

Mud Houses

This is the most iconic part of these 2 villages. Though its very common to have mud houses all around the valley, most have converted their houses to modern roofs, but this 2 villages still follow same tradition atleast most of them. The aerial view of the villages looks absolutely amazing covered with mud houses all around. It is because of very low temperatures in winters, the people here construct mud houses.

Tabo Monastery – The Oldest Functional Monastery in India

The very famous Monastery in Tabo has its own elegance. There are actually 2 monasteries in Tabo, new and the old one. The old one is historically very famous as its the oldest functional Monastery in India, but rituals happens in both the Monasteries. The monks there said that, Dalai Lama has a very close connection with this monastery and wishes to spend the last days here, but due to the connectivity issue to he lives in Dharamshala.

Location

Located on the eastern side of the Himachal Pradesh, these villages are almost 100 kms from Reckong Peo, the HQ of Kinnaur Valley and largest city as well. Shimla is 293kms from Nako and the road connecting Shimla to Nako(Until Shipkila Pass) is popularly known as Hindustan-Tibet Highway as the British used this road to commute between India and Tibet from Shipki La Pass which is the current Indo-China Border controlled by Indian Armed Forces. Hence this highway is maintained by the Border Roads Organization. Nako and Tabo are 64 kms apart and lies on the road between Reckong Peo to Kaza.

Nako and Tabo are almost at a equal distance of 290-300 kms from both Shimla and Manali. But Manali road gets closed during winters and Shimla depends on landslides. As the road passes through rocky mountains it is highly prone to landslides and as there is no alternate connectivity from Shimla to Kinnaur Valley except the long route from Kaza, when the road is blocked for several days it becomes a serious trouble to the local people and tourists. 

How to Reach

Train 

The nearest Railway Station is Shimla which lies on the Kalka-Shimla line. This is a narrow gauge line starting from Kalka. Once you reach Shimla, you can take a HRTC or Private Bus to reach Nako, Tabo or even reach Reckong Peo then come here. Even private taxis can be hired.

Air

The nearest airport is Shimla Airport 22 kms from the city. Only Alliance Air operates ATRs here. Other major airports are Chandigarh or Delhi too. Once you reach Shimla by road one can reach Nako and Tabo.

Road

Road Condition

Once you reach Shimla the only way to reach Nako and Tabo is by road. The distance is 305 kms and the journey is filled with a lot of adventure as the roads after Narkanda are very narrow and the views are fabulous. This road is popularly known as Hindustan Tibet Highway and most of the parts are done by the method of Half Tunneling which is rarely seen in other parts of India. Private taxis are available in Shimla and also many rental bike providers are available in Shimla city.

Once you cross Reckong Peo, then the road condition almost till Nako is almost good. The stretches like Ka Loop and few hair pin curves are very risky due to deep ravines on one side and mountains on another side. But trust me that has been the best ever journey of my life, which I have described in a whole blog. The road condition is not that bad, but the views all around the journey is truly marvelous.

As mentioned, after Reckong Peo comes Nako, then Tabo before Kaza. So all the vehicles moving towards Kaza has to go through the same route every time. Nako to Kaza route is almost in a better condition compared to other stretches like Manali-Kaza, Shimla-Peo, Chitkul-Peo.

HRTC Bus Service

HRTC buses ply between Shimla to Kaza, via Reckong Peo and all the buses to Kaza should go via Nako, Tabo. A direct bus goes from Shimla to Kaza via Peo(Check HRTC Timings here). It leaves Shimla early morning and reaches Reckong Peo by evening, halts there and leaves to Kaza next morning. Keep in mind, you have to make your hotel arrangements and buy different tickets for the both legs of the journey.

Reckong Peo is well connected by direct buses from Delhi, Haridwar, Chandigarh and other important places of HP. All the buses which run in Spiti are actually operated by Reckong Peo depot. Once you reach Reckong Peo, there are multiple bus services to Kaza. Apart from Shimla-Kaza, they also run Rampur-Kaza where you can reach Nako and Tabo. Also at 12, there’s also a bus to only Nako from Reckong Peo.

Even Nako and Tabo can be reached from Kaza in the same bus heading towards Reckong Peo. Another bus to Chango from Kaza can take you only till Tabo.

Local Commute

Once you reach Nako or Tabo, all the tourist attractions are nearby which can be covered by walking only. These villages are pretty small and the mountains, surrounding views, monastery, the weather and the culture is the main reason to visit Nako and Tabo. Though taxis can be hired to reach Nako and Tabo from either Manali or Reckong Peo/Shimla   

Weather

Due to the proximity towards the Himalayas, these villages usually experiences a very cold climate. The winters in the months of December, January, February and March receive heavy snowfall and even in other months the snow capped mountains can be easily spotted. The road is usually not blocked during this period. Though Shimla-Peo and Manali-Kaza roads are always unpredictable.

The best time to visit would be from September to December as the weather is not too cold and it is the Apple season in Spiti. Don’t forget to taste juicy, fresh apples during this weather.

Culture

There are decent stay options both in Nako and Tabo. Many homestays and hotels are available easily, there shouldn’t be any trouble finding accommodation in either of these villages. Ranging from 600 to 3000, travelers can choose accommodation of their budget and its not recommended to book online as most of them aren’t listed online and they’re easily available once you reach there.

Also one can stay in Tabo Monastery Guest House which is well maintained and within the Tabo Monastery campus. Even the rates are minimal, like 300 Rs per room, but they can’t be booked online, its based on first come first serve basis. But it would be a tremendous experience staying with the monks and experiencing the true essence of Monastery life.

Exploring Nako: Must-Do Activities

Ideal Plan to visit Nako-Tabo

The Ideal trip to Spiti-Kinnaur Valley can be planned for 3 to 7 days as per your timings. After Kalpa one can straight away head towards Chitkul, lovely village in Kinnaur Valley and later to Nako and Tabo before heading towards Kaza. Just 2-3 days are enough to visit both of these villages. 

Once you finish exploring Kinnaur Valley, you can straight away head towards Nako taking the Kaza bus and stay for a night. Next day can travel to Tabo and after a day stay can head towards Kaza for further journey to Spiti Valley.

If you’re coming from Manali side, then after Kaza then after Kaza head to Tabo later to Nako. If this is the plan then its better to return from Kinnaur Side after exploring Chitkul and Kalpa.

The ideal trip to Spiti actually starts from Shimla exploring Kinnaur Valley and later heading towards Kaza then to Manali completing an entire circuit which we even did. This requires a minimum of 8 days, but trust me this is the best trip I have ever taken.

Things to keep in mind

• Winters are extremely cold and even the average temperature itself is lesser, don’t forget to carry winter clothing.
• Landslides are common in Hindustan Tibet highway, check the road status before you plan your trip. We reached Reckong Peo from Haridwar in a HRTC bus and the next day the bus wasn’t operated due to the landslide, we were lucky to reach the previous day. The block continued for a few days and luckily we planned to explore Spiti through Kaza and we escaped without trouble. 
• Petrol Pumps are easily available in every town on the way from Shimla to Reckong Peo, even there’s an Indian Oil outlet in Peo. But once you cross Reckong Peo the next fuel outlet is available in Kaza itself, make sure you plan your trip accordingly. Even coming from Manali side, after Manali the next outlet is in Kaza and after Kaza directly in Reckong Peo
• The Jio network all around is pretty good and internet speed is good as well. Even I remember watching India-England match on the journey between Nako to Tabo without much disturbance in network.
• ATMs are available in Reckong Peo
