Introduction

Puri has been one of the most famous pilgrimage centers in the whole of India. It is one of the  Chardhams along with Badrinath, Rameshwaram, Dwarka situated on the Eastern Coast in Odisha. It is also popularly known as Sri Jagannatha Dham and the economy of the entire city depends on the temple itself because of the large number of pilgrims visiting here everyday.

It is widely known for Rathyatra also popularly called Chariot Festival or Car Festival, where the three deities of Lord Jagannatha are placed over three giant chariots. It is the oldest and largest chariot festival in the world where millions gather in the small town of Puri.

Everyday ritual of changing the Temple Flag

This is the ritual that has been followed since 1800 years. The flag has to be changed everyday by the priest which is about a 45 storeyed building and he does it without any protective gears everyday. If this doesn’t happen then the temple has to be closed for 18 years.

The Opposite Direction of the Waving Flag

The flag on top of temple waves opposite to the direction of the wind. Even I checked the current direction of the wind myself and found it to be true. This happens both during day and the night time.

Mysterious disappearance of Shadow of the temple

No matter what’s the day or the time of the day, there wouldn’t be any shadow of the temple at any parts of the surroundings, but this isn’t applicable with other buildings or structures around. As it’s located very close to the Eastern Coast one can expect a hot climate round the year, though the days are long and sunny all the time, you never witness a shadow.

Unusual Cooking in the Earthen Pots

The Maha Prasadam is made everyday to serve the lord and by keeping 7 earthen pots one by one. Even the same is served as prasad to the devotees which is considered to be very sacred and the Puri journey is incomplete without having the delicious prasad. It is hard to believe that the food at the uppermost pot is cooked first then the ones below.

The Silent Sea Waves

As everyone knows the beach is hardly kms away from the temple and during silent times the sound of waves can be heard all over the city, but once you enter the temple you can’t hear any sound of waves which turns out to be strange.

Nobody stands above the Lord

No birds or aircrafts fly above the temple. I have personally seen many birds flying beside the temple but none of them fly above the temple. Also this is a no fly zone for aircrafts as well as drones legally.

The Strange 2D Chakra

There is a huge chakra on top of the temple which is actually a 2D structure. No matter from whichever direction you see it from the ground, it appears to be facing you every time. Even the pictures captured at different angles reveal the same.

The Magical Maha Prasadam

Food for offering to the lord and devotees is prepared everyday and it is cooked at the same quantity each and everyday. The thing to look out is, not a single day the food was short nor was it wasted on any occasion. It’s actually true that sometimes the visitors are very less during cyclones or other times, but some times the crowd is extremely high. Though the food is always cooked at the same rate and never falls short.

Inverse Direction of the Sea Breeze

It’s quite a natural phenomena that the wind blows from sea to land during the day time and reverse during the night. But it happens in the inverse way in Puri which sounds interesting.

These are some strange things which you’ll observe when you visit this divine place. It actually feels strange to believe these things but even science can’t give proper explanation to all these things. This is the beauty of our Nation with a long history, rich culture, traditions and immense diversity.
